How To Measure Resistance Using Multimeter

Resistance is measure of blocking of Current and measured in ohm. Resistances comes with color coding ,you can measure resistance using color code method following are the values assigned to different colors.

                            Black                          0

                            Brown                        1

                            Red                             2

                            Orange                      3

                            Yellow                       4

                            Green                        5

                             Blue                          6

                             Violet                       7

                             Grey                          8

                             White                       9

                             Gold                         5%

                             Silver                       10%

                             No color                  20%

The resistance of resistor is – (Value of first color) (Value of second color) * 10Value of 3rd color

For example if you have  colors as brown, black, orange and gold as tolerance, then the value is 10 * 103 +- 5% = 10k +- 5%

The 5% is tolerance(10*103*5/100 = 500) means the value of resistance may vary in the limits as 10k – 500 to 10k +500.

If you want to measure resistance using Multimeter then follow this:

  • Rotate your Multimeter’s pointer to R(resistance) region and choose any value, Multimeter will show resistance below the value chosen.
  • Connect the Leeds of Multimeter to both sides of resistance and the value of resistance will be shown.
